Movie Review: A Tale of Love, Freedom, Surrender and Hope- Room
**Spoiler Alert!**
Where do I start! Who would've known a girl who nobody knew would come out a real-actor before 'Room' was green-lit! Who would've foreseen the Academy receiving backlash from allover for not nominating a 9 year old kid for his performance in a movie which most people didn't even know existed before it's nominations for the Oscars! 'Room' made these possible. With a thin plot, 'Room' makes it big! Really big! by pointing right directions and asking right questions.'Room' tells a story of two captives, a mother and a son, who's born in that room and haven't known anything until his 5 years of age, when they both finally makes it out. If you think this movie is just about mother-son bonding and relationship, you're wrong. 'Room' is so much more than that. 20 minutes into the movie and you already start feeling for the lead characters. You'll find yourself screaming out to the screen and wanting to tell Jack (played by Jacob Tremlay) to stay low on the truck. You'll probably start thinking why hasn't Ma aka Joy (played by Brie Larson) stopped cooperating with Old Nick or what all would be probable ways that she can get out of 'Room' once and for all. You'll start fearing what Old Nick would do if something doesn't go according to his plan even though he doesn't look that aggressive (except for one scene). When you start emoting for the characters in a movie, that's when you know you're watching a great movie.
Imagine yourself as a 5 year old kid and discovering for the first time that there's a whole new world outside 'Room' and that 'Room' is not all the space/world. Such set of emotions needed to make audience believe in you and Jacob Tremblay emotes all of them perfectly! with ease! This kid is gonna reach heights! I still wonder why hasn't he been Nominated for 2016 Oscars in Best Actor in Supporting Role. It's not done there. As a mother who has been held captive for 7 years and also delivering a son in 'Room', from his captor, Brie Larson puts up a terrible performance! She had a wide range of emotions... love, anger, fear, desperation, helplessness, strength, obsession and more and she impresses in pretending every emotion. That well deserved Oscar win against stars like Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence shows just how much potential Brie's got. Joan Allen as Joy's mother, puts up a decent performance.
Highlights:
- Lead actor performances
- Pace and cinematography
- Psychological effect and depictions.
Appreciations:
- Academy Award for Best Actress in a Lead Role- Brie Larson.
What does 'Room' do best?
Sticking to it's focus area. The Story is about a mother and son and 'Room' sticks to that. All other characters in the movie come and go just to support the lead characters. Few open ends like what was the motive of the captor and why Joy aka Ma's father doesn't like Jack are left unanswered and that's seemingly the best thing to keep focus on the story and maintain the flow of it.
Deep Study:
Even after getting out of 'Room', to freedom, Jack keeps asking if he can go back to 'Room' and when they can do that. It depicts that there'll always be a part of 'Room' inside him and he cannot lead a normal life. That's surrender.
Verdict: One of the best movies of the decade!
