Movie Review: Front-runner for 2016 Oscars- Best Picture, Spotlight!

It was way back in 2000 when 'Erin Brokovich' was released and took Box Office by a storm. It went on to become one of the monumental movies by taking a spot in that year's Best Picture Oscar Nominations and changing Julia Roberts' 'Pretty Woman' image. It is after 14 years a movie with similar backdrop becomes a front-runner for Best Picture Oscar.

'Spotlight' tells a true story of how Boston Globe uncovered massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese. With an all star cast ensemble, 'Spotlight' is filled with gripping story telling, and perfect performances. Mark Ruffalo as Michael Rezendes steals the show while Michael Keaton as Walter 'Robby' Robinson leads the movie with solid performance. Howard Shore's Music and Masanobu Takayanagi's Cinematography deserves special mentions. Rachel McAdams puts in decent performance and looks stunning...still. Tom McCarthy stitches a near perfect movie. Liev Schreiber and Stanley Tucci leave their mark even though they have relatively less screen-time.

The best part about 'Spotlight' is it doesn't scream for attention. It's evident that the makers knew exactly what they wanted to say and said that out in a linear and simple way. The movie has a wonderful script that's toned down for every moviegoer to understand it. Certain dialogues like (Possible Spoiler Alert!) "If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to abuse them." and "We got two stories here: a story about degenerate clergy, and a story about a bunch of lawyers turning child abuse into a cottage industry. Which story do you want us to write? Because we're writing one of them." makes your blood boil and think and feel at the same time.

Why to watch the movie?
  • Script, Cinematography and Music.
  • Lead performances.
  • Gripping story telling.

Why not to watch it?
  • If serious movies are not your cup of tea.
Why famous?
  • All star cast.
  • Front-runner for 2016 Oscars.

'Spotlight' touches the psychological effect sexual abuse can have on children in the most subtle but compelling way. It is so brave that it brings out various questions like "Are God-men above Right thing?", "Is it God that's asking what God-men are seeking?", "Are God-men above the Law? The System?" and also successfully answers them.

Verdict: Breaks the Silence by being intelligently loud.
