Movie Review: A Test to Your Patience!- Rock On 2!!
***Spoiler Alert!***
Golden Rule #1: Not every super hit movie needs a sequel.Golden Rule #2: When you force a unnecessary sequel on audience with absolutely no interesting plot, it falls flat. It'll not even work as a cash grab.
Yup, the makers of Rock On 2 totally and completely ignored both these golden rules. They tried forcing this movie so desperately on audience that they didn't even hesitate to twist each and every one of our favorite characters from the first part so much that they lost all that we loved about them. Totally. Rock On!! ends perfectly. The story of Magik, a rock band and their friendship, sorting out their issues and giving closure to all the characters involved. Rock On 2 completely undoes all that work and creates a mess. And moving forward, it keeps messing up the situations and characters that at a certain point, you feel like every character involved need psychiatric treatment. Though Rock On!! was a complete picture, when Rock On 2 was announced, I was still excited because, you know, its Magik, music and Farhan Akhtar. When cast listed Shashank Arora and Kumud Mishra, I was even more excited. And boy oh boy! was I wrong!!
Rock On 2 starts off with KD (Purab Kohli) narrating how life has been to the members of Magik and introduces what's going on with Adi's (Farhan Akhtar) life. Adi has run away (yet again! somebody hold this guy on a leash) to Meghalaya from Magik and Mumbai after one of youngsters who approached for his help commits suicide. He's handling a farm in Meghalaya and fighting with his demons there. (Apparently, everybody in this movie are fighting with their demons in this movie. Stop it! Let's not jump there already, there's more to tell!) Jiah (troubled Shraddha Kapoor) is staying with her troubled father, Pandit Ji (Kumud Mishra) when Uday (troubled Shashank Arora) comes to Pandit Ji for his acceptance. Jiah and Uday start making music instantly. They both get to meet Magik after Adi is back when wild fire burns off all his farm. They instantly decide to put up a stage show at Joe's Bar and Jiah bails out from the stage. They then come to know that Pandit Ji doesn't like such music in which Piano and Guitar are mixed (What!) and that Jiah is afraid that her father might get angry. They also find out that the guy who committed suicide is Jiah's brother (saw it coming a mile away!). Now, Adi embarks on redemption by supporting Jiah. How all these troubled characters (trust me, all of them) come to peace form the rest of the story.
Okay! Don't know where to start. The director seems to be inspired bythe character Flash (from Zootopia) because his movie.... is... so.... verrry... slow... lethargic.... long. The movie just doesn't fucking move ahead. The reason why Magik is broke, yet again, makes no sense at all. And the reason why Rahul commits suicide seems like a joke! Is Magik only band in the whole world? C'mon! The most lethargic part? every character needs pep talk. Not one, not two but three pep talks. Every. Damn. Character. And oh, Shraddha Kapoor needs four. Four pep talks. Those lazy, long, gyani pep talks. All characters are distorted. The first movie worked because of the likable characters and Shujaat Saudagar (director) seems to completely miss that point. You don't care for Jiah or Uday or Pandit Ji or Joe. By the end, Adi becomes so annoying a character that you wish he just drops dead! Joe is now a narrow minded money grabber who doesn't care about others. KD is a guy who has absolutely no idea what he wants to stand for. Adi is a family person and loves his wife so much yet leaves her to stay at a remote village. Sakshi is now fed up with Adi. Jiah is a crampy grumpy girl. Pandit Ji is a crampy grumpy guy. In the second half, after really long messed up sequences and years of staying away, Adi comes up with "We are musicians man, let's make some music!" and at that instance, I was laughing my ass off and wanted to punch that guy in the teeth. (Seriously! you NOW realize that you are a musician?!). And music, boy can I complain about music! Towards the end of the movie, they end the concert with 'Rock On- Title Song' that's when it struck me that was the only best track they had on this movie. What a pathetic waste of a movie!
Highlights:
- Cinematography
Drawbacks:
- One word. EVERYTHING!
Shashank Arora and Kumud Mishra are two great talents in Bollywood today. And you have them on your project just so you can waste them. Total fucking waste!
Walking out of the theater, 'Udja Re' was playing and the lyric goes Ye jeena bhi socho koi jeena hai and we were instantly like Ye movie bhi socho koi movie hai!
Verdict: Do not risk watching this. Carry Tiger Balm if you still want to.
