Movie Review: Better Stay at Home and Stare into Nothingness!- Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
***Spoiler Alert!***
Thanks to my sisters, I had to watch this movie which I wouldn't have otherwise! The best thing about this movie? The whole controversy stirred couple of weeks before it's release. Yup, that was much more entertaining! Though I didn't have much hopes from Karan Johar, I've always been an admirer of Ranbir Kapoor's acting, especially when he cries and looking at sensible subjects he usually chooses (barring a few like Besharam, Roy e.t.c.), I was tricked into believing there'll be something new in the movie. Oh boy, was I wrong! The movie starts off with Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) being interviewed after he has become a successful singer. One of the questions from the interviewer makes him start his life story with Alizeh (Anushka Sharma) and Saba (Aishwarya Rai). Ayan has these obsessive feelings (ooh! creepy!!) towards Alizeh, a weak character who is obsessed (creepy part 2!!) with Ali (Fawad Khan). As Alizeh carries off to marry Ali after a stretched first half with meaningless scenes and unnecessary episodes, Ayan decides to smash himself out of Alizeh's life. Now, he's broken and meets Saba and uses her to get himself out of the misery called Alizeh. After a while, he decides to meet Alizeh with Saba so he can boast about Saba and make Alizeh jealous (Creepy part 3!!). He fights with Alizeh because she doesn't feel jealous of Saba (seriously?!). And Saba calls it quits when she realizes Ayan is still in love with Alizeh and that he's just using her (Good for her!). Now, Ayan is heartbroken and starts looking for Alizeh after finding out she called quits on her husband Ali (The berth is vacant now, right!). Finally, when he meets Alizeh, she's suffering from cancer and doesn't have much time left (Surprise, surprise!! No, that's called lazy writing!). At a specific moment, he again makes a move on her just to see if she'll go on and sleep with him (Creepy part 4!!). Finally (OK, I wish this was the final "finally"), he realizes she's got great love for him but not the love-love way but more of friendzoned-love way and accepts it. That is the actual plot of the movie. (No, I'm not trolling.)
The movie is got all Bollywood stereotypes. Bar pick-ups? Check. Kiss- Sex- Kiss- Repeat? Check. Filthy rich lead characters? Check. Wealthy marriage celebrations? Check. Unwanted rubbish? Check. It goes without saying that we've seen all of them like a hundred times before. The plot isn't new either. Unrequited love? Come on! The whole of first half is filled with scenes and sequences which are in no way necessary for the film. They're just added there to prolong the movie's run time. Lisa Haydon, Alia Bhatt, Shah Rukh Khan appear in roles that were unnecessary in the first place. It seems that Karan Johar had got them in the movie just because he can and not for any addition to the movie. Even Uday Chopra could do the role of SRK in the movie and it'd have made no difference whatsoever. Anushka Sharma puts in a decent performance and Ranbir Kapoor carries the movie on his shoulders with befitting performance. Music could be the sole reason of how this movie is making money.
Also, can anybody ever say no to sex when their partner suggests it?
Like "Hey, Saba, let's have sex!".
"No, Ayan, I'm having a bad headache, you know!". Ughhh!!!
Highlights:
- Music
- Ranbir Kapoor Performance
Drawbacks:
- Repeated Plot and sequences
- Formulaic approach to the subject
- Lengthy run-time
- Editing
- Too many characters
By the time the title song had started, audience had assumed that's the end of the movie and started walking out of the screening though there was around 20 minutes of film still left. It goes without saying how choppy was the editing and that the movie just couldn't give closure.
Verdict: Don't. Just don't. It's high time Bollywood stopped glorifying stalking and obsession in the name of love.
Itna gussa..
