Movie Review: Fictionalized Biography With Limited Potential Works Wonders!- Sully!

***Spoiler Alert!***
Clint Eastwood is a Legend! At 85, his American Sniper (overrated) instantly grabbed 6 Academy Award Nominations. Tom Hanks is another Legend who needs no introduction. The team-up of these two Legends to tell an untold story of 'Miracle on Hudson' pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger created enough buzz among the movie world. The Trailer created enough attention to become one of the biggest movies of this year. Though the movie works, the "true events" play minimal part in this thrilling tale.

Sully wakes up from a nightmare as he crashes Flight 1549. This happens the same day as he actually saves the flight (partially!) and 155 passengers in it by force landing on 'The Hudson River' after losing both the engines after a bunch of birds crash into them. What follows is a couple of days investigation from NTSB, who thinks Sully landing the plane on The Hudson was a bad move and finally clearing him off after a dramatized thrill ride. The movie really had less potential and a story everyone very well knew, considering it happened only in 2009 and in broad daylight. What makes the movie compelling is the events that were forcefully dramatized. Them not seeming forced into the screenplay is what really works for the movie.

If not for the sharp writing, the movie would've fell flat. Choosing non-linear way to tell the story was the best decision. There really wasn't much at stake for Sully here. He was the most famous person in America for all the good reasons and there wouldn't be anything much NTSB or the Airlines company or it's Insurance company would do to change that. Yet, Mr. Eastwood and Mr. Hanks delivers and make work to get tension into the audience. Limited run-time helps to that. Tom Hanks lives in the role, just like every other role he plays. Another effective way to build tension in audience by giving roots to the passengers and Eastwood does that too. Cinematography works great. With 65% of the movie filmed in IMAX cameras, frames and images look elegant. Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney and others do a decent job. Though the story is too much fictionalized, that actually helps the movie to excel. I mean, c'mon! who wouldn't like a bunch of rich greedy fellows try to crush a noble, self-made hero only to fail! (That seems to be the only line Clint Eastwood had to say to sell this movie to the producers!)

Highlights:

  • Screenplay
  • Tom Hanks
  • Cinematography

  • Less material to offer!

P.S: Cast Away, The Terminal, Apollo 13, Captain Phillips and now Sully?! Do not travel with Tom Hanks! Never!! Ever!!! Ever!!!!

P.P.S: I have this weird feeling that Disney's next project would be to about the "birds" that lost their loved ones because a plane crashed into them when they were just minding their job and flying! *perspective!* Please God! Make this happen!!
