Movie Review: Same Old Same Old, Less Fun!- X-Men Apocalypse
***Spoiler Alert!***
I've always seen Bryan Singer as the Father of X-Men Movies Franchise. Overall, he's a great filmmaker with a few set backs. The prime reason he was able to do great X-Men movies seems to be his understanding of the characters. Once 'The Last Stand' flushed all his work down the gutter (Bryan Singer didn't direct that movie), the call of making prequels worked out perfect for 'First Class' (Still the greatest X-Men movie for me). Alternate timeline strategy worked out great for 'Days of Future Past'. With the need of bringing in popular X-Men characters (Scott, Storm, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler and Angel), 'Apocalypse' set up a badass villain against the X-Men. But, did it work out?!'X-Men Apocalypse' starts off with Apocalypse transforming himself into a mutant (Oscar Isaac) who's got immortality. Certain Egyptian resistance team, which is against the whole process cause an accident and the transformation stops mid-way with Oscar Isaac (now the Apocalypse) getting trapped under debris of the collapsed pyramid. Fast forward to 1980's, Agent McTaggert completes the transformation of Apocalypse accidentally and we have Apocalypse recruiting his 4 Horse-men (Magneto, Angel, Storm and Psylocke) to bring End to the World(Oh enough of the End of the World already!!). Prof. Charles Xavier on the other hand, understands that there's something big going on and gets Agent McTaggert to explain him what exactly is it. Apocalypse abducts Xavier and in the process, the X-School is accidentally blown-up. Again! (not complaining because that's one of the coolest scene in a not-so-cool movie. All thanks to Quicksilver!). The school students teaming up against Apocalypse and saving the world forms the rest of the movie. Oh! One more thing! Also, Magneto is a confused good-bad guy! Just like he has been in the last two movies! (Just Saying!).
James McAvoy makes a great Prof. Charles Xavier just like Michael Fassbender makes a great Magneto. Fan favourite Sophie Turner (for Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones) gives a good performance as Jean Grey. Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Lawrence, Tye Sheridan, Nicholas Hoult all put in decent performances. The storytelling never picks-up any pace. The villain's motives are confusing and also is underutilized. Music is on the positive side. Hugh Jackman's Wolverine excites already exhausted viewers for a brief time. The climax is dragged beyond limits.
Highlights:
- Visual Effects
- Music
Drawbacks:
- Been-there-done-that
- Story Telling
- Weak Screenplay
- Overstuffed
What does X-Men Apocalypse do worst?
Xmen Apocalypse does the same mistake which Avengers: Age of Ultron did. Forcing too many unnecessary backstories. Also, enough with trying to convince Magneto to take the good side. Enough with glorifying Mystique. There isn't anything Mystique left in JLaw's Mystique! Not anymore! Half-way down the movie we realise watching 'First Class' or 'X2' in DVD at home would be a wiser decision.
Apocalypse can grow in size not only in Prof. Xavier's dreams but also IRL. Whatever happened to that!
Verdict: Worst X-Men movie? Nope!
Weakest movie of new trilogy? Hell Yeah!
P.S: This movie having better rating than that of BvS on Rotten Tomatoes suggests that there's something horribly wrong with Critics!
